I went to the front desk to ask if i could use my laptop there to search for a job. She said i needed a library card, so need a MO state ID. I explained that i didn't officially move to MO yet, still have an IL ID but need to find a job in MO soon. She didn't budge, so i instisted, explained that I'm currently staying out in the country with no internet, i practically begged till she finally okayed. For 3days i would go to 1of the 2(or more) computer areas, filled with computers but only 2-3people there at a time. I'd push the keyboard back and place my laptop there and plug it in. Until the lady came by and said " you can't plug in your laptop there" i said "ok, I'm sorry about that." i unplugged my laptop and kept working on my application. She came back "Ma'am, i said you can't have your laptop plugged in there!" I said that i did, just didn't pick up the cord. (The guy on a computer behind me said "she already unplugged it, geeze!") She then said "Well you can't be sitting there, anyway, you're blocking the computer from someone who may want to use it." (there was only one other person there and this was during regular work and school hours.) Still, i said "okay, I'm sorry about that." She came back less than a minute later, "Ma'am! You're not supposed to be sitting there!" i said "i was only finishing up what i was writing on my application, i have terrible memory with good writing ideas." i started getting up, getting my things and she said "You didn't need to wait to finish anything! You could've just grabbed your laptop and moved to the seat over there, you can plug it in there." I said "ok, I'm going now." i went to the seat she pointed at, it was a chair and desk in a small corner in the wall with no other chairs for anyone to sit near me. Not only was i to sit completely alone, but there were 4AC vents in that corner. 4!! I was so cold, i didn't last another 20min there. Thanks, PUBLIC library, for helping me to have a place to search for a job...

[That man that cut in our conversation had told me before that the lady working there only treats white people nicely... The man is African American, the lady is African American, and I am Mexican. Whether race-related or not, (i don't know) i feel i wasnt treated right.]

Super nice and helpful staff. Parking isn't great. They do have a handicap accessible elevator.

This is a jewel of a historic library. The books are hugely varied (and if they don't have it- they help you locate it elsewhere). Both adult and children's programs offered are amazing for such a small library. And the staff are to be commended for their commitment to protect the integrity of this old library. I have been coming to this library for over 40 years and it is still one of my favorite places to breathe in book smells, and enjoy some peaceful moments reading. Did I mention the architecture?...that's worth the trip in too.
